The announcement by the Conservatives of the £1 million Inheritance Tax-free estate for married couples comes with strings attached.
In April 2017 the Residence Nil Rate Band was introduced and this, together with the already available Transferable Nil Rate Band, will give married couples a tax exemption of £1 million on the second death from April 2020.
The exemption will, however, only be available if you own a property and leave the property to lineal descendants and your Will does not contain certain trusts or an age restriction for grandchildren.
